TAMPA - More than 70 galleries and museums in the Bay area are hosting exhibits related to this month's "Convergence 2008: Textures in the Tropics," an international conference of fiber and textile art sponsored by Handweavers Guild of America.

Each venue presents an aspect of the exhibit's theme; all will host free receptions during the Convergence Gallery Crawl from 4 to 7 p.m. June 27.

Among the free exhibits in Central and South Tampa are:

Brad Cooper Gallery is presenting "Venetian Vessels by Leland Shaw and Coptic Textiles From Ancient Egypt" through July 11.

Shaw retired in 2003 as professor emeritus from the University of Florida's School of Architecture, where he taught for 37 years. His ceramic vessels often include Italian sayings stamped onto the thrown pottery surface.

The Coptic textiles were created in Egypt by the early Christians, or Coptic Christians. The pieces were selected and assembled from several private collections by Robert Bianchi, an Egyptologist who served as an assistant in the Egyptian department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Brad Cooper Gallery is at 1712 E. Seventh Ave. Call (813) 248-6098 for details.

•Also in Ybor City, Hoffman Porges Gallery and the Handweavers Guild present "Costumes & Coverings: Non-Wearable Art," in which artist Anne Abendroth interprets the clothing of ancient peoples using modern materials and techniques.

The show runs Saturday through July 5 at 1907 E. Seventh Ave. Call (813) 247-2000.

•Hillsborough Community College's Ybor Campus Art Gallery, in the Visual Arts Building at Palm Avenue and 15th Street, has two exhibits opening Thursday and running through July 6.

"Weaving and Resist" features fabric works by more than 15 artists from around the country. They explore the concept of "resist" in the action of dyes, paint felting, shaping and burning.

"Weaving a Community Together" presents the woven results of an annual partnership between the gallery and Community Stepping Stones, a neighborhood art project for at-risk youngsters in Sulphur Springs.

The gallery also will hang an outdoor installation in the arches of the El Pasaje Building, 1320 E. Ninth Ave., from 1 to 9 p.m. June 25 to 28. Called "An Octopus's Garden," the installation features 20 fiber and mixed-media panels created by HCC design students and members of the Tampa Bay Surface Design Guild.

•The University of Tampa's Scarfone/Hartley Gallery and the American Tapestry Alliance will present an exhibit of hand-woven contemporary tapestries Monday through July 11.

The artists hail from diverse backgrounds and employ different technical and conceptual approaches, drawing inspiration from various cultures.
