Community Safe Haven Receives Donation
TAMPA - The Resources in Community Hope House was among the recipients of grants from the Tampa Palms Women's Club.
The RICH House is a community safe haven in Sulphur Springs.
Almost $8,000 was distributed to several groups and a scholarship recipient at a club luncheon June 5. Club members raised the money through various activities, including a spring fashion show.
"It is a great honor to bring together these groups," club President Marion Brookover told about 75 attendees. "They give so much back to our community."
Tampa police Officer Debbie Boles accepted the RICH House award, thanking the club members, who also presented a check in December. She said that money helped with a holiday party for the children who attend the center, where they get tutoring and participate in recreational activities.
She also praised Brookover, who volunteers at the center and has brought others to the center to assist, including those who helped install a sound system.
"We had an 82-year-old gentleman crawling around our attic," Boles said.
She said the children in the low-income neighborhood appreciate the efforts.
"They can't believe people they don't even know come into the neighborhood to do things like that for them," Boles said. "The money you have donated helps keep their little oasis going."
Other groups receiving funds were God's Pedal Power, Wheel of Success, Pace Center for Girls and the Outreach Assisting Students In Schools Network.
Joyce Jones, a University of South Florida student, received a $1,000 scholarship from the club.
