SUNSET PARK - Pat Smith said she didn't mind the sewer pipe temporarily blocking her driveway on West Leona Street.

She was given plenty of notice so she did her grocery shopping during the two hours the city's Wastewater Department said it would be working in front of her house.

"They're trying very hard to be courteous of all the neighbors," Smith said.

Since the beginning of June, workers have been replacing a sewer line stretching 900 feet along Leona from South Schiller Street to Manhattan Avenue.

"We have 600 feet in and another 300 to go," said construction engineer Don Cermeno, who anticipates the $125,000 project will be completed in about two weeks.

Directional drilling is being used to replace the pipe, so workers don't have to dig up the asphalt, Cermeno said. Only the eastbound lane of Leona is closed during the repairs.

"It needs to be done," Smith said. "Thank God they can work during the rain."
