TAMPA - The Tampa City Council today reversed its preliminary approval for beer and wine sales at a proposed beer garden in Hyde Park Village.
"We are very concerned about the noise," said Deborah Rhodes, who paid $530,000 last year for a 2,200-square-foot condominium above the pedestrian shopping complex where the International Beer Garten wanted to locate. "This is under our bedrooms."
She also complained about noise and food odor from the nearby Wine Exchange.
The council gave preliminary approval April 17 for alcohol sales at the beer garden.
Since then, business owners Patty Corey and April Cox discovered "negative attitudes" about their proposal and had "come to realize we are not welcome," according to a letter from the partners read by Councilman Charlie Miranda.
Corey and Cox did not withdraw their request for the permit, however, in part because of the terms of their lease with village owner Wasserman Real Estate LLC.
An attorney for Wasserman told the council that the mix of residential and retail "is the whole point of living in a community like this."
The property's future is unclear.
