Harrod A Finalist For GQ Award

TAMPA - Hyde Park resident Chad Harrod is one of five finalists for The Gentlemen's Fund, Better Men Better World Search, sponsored by GQ magazine.

Harrod, a member of the board of directors of the Pediatric Cancer Foundation since 2003, was nominated by the organization, which seeks cures for pediatric cancer and assists families affected by the disease.

He has served as board president and vice president. He is chairman of the organization's Fashion Funds the Cure fashion show featuring local celebrities and young cancer patients. This year's event netted $300,000 and drew 550 guests.

Eighteen years ago, at age 13, Harrod underwent surgery and treatment for a benign brain tumor.

Harrod, who runs a commercial real estate office, is the son of Margo and Gary Harrod of South Tampa.

The winner of the GQ search will receive $10,000 for the nominating organization and will be featured in the magazine.

Casino Night, Auction Help Humane Society

WEST Sophia Nakis of Coldwell Banker Hyde Park and Bill Congelio of New England Financial presented Poker for Pets Casino Night on Aug. 14 at the Baker & Co. General Store.

The event, which raised $2,400 for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, featured gaming tables, an auction and drinks. Mark Rodriquez was the auctioneer.

Alumni Association Plans Fashion Show
Sacred Heart Academy Alumni Association will sponsor a fall luncheon and fashion show at 11 a.m. Oct. 4 at the school, 3515 N. Florida Ave.

Tickets are $20 and proceeds benefit the school's scholarship fund.

Beach Park Club Brewing Up Event

BEACH PARK - Beach Park Garden Club President Debra Porter will host the club's annual Membership Coffee from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 10 at her home on Sylvan Ramble.

Betty Cox is chairwoman of event, designed to welcome returning members and recruit new members. Cox met with committee members Evelyn Andretta, Eileen Korach, Betty McInvale and Sharon Stroll at her home Aug. 20 to plan the event.

Porter also hosted a board meeting and luncheon to finalize plans and to discuss the club's goals for 2008-09.

DAR Tampa Chapter Planning Luncheon

PALMA CEIA - The Tampa chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will have its Constitution Day Luncheon on Sept. 13.

Col. Alvin J. Bedgood, vice commander for headquarters southern region, Civil Air Patrol, will be the speaker. The event will be at 11 a.m. at the Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club, 1601 S. MacDill Ave.

Roberta Schofield, Florida State Society DAR chairwoman of the Haley House, will give an update on the facility, which provides temporary lodging to veterans receiving treatment and their families.

Barbara Makant, Florida State Society DAR vice regent, will be special guest. Members of Cub Scout Pack 25 and Boy Scout Troop 25 will provide the Color Guard.

Egypt Shrine Presents Award

DANA SHORES - Tommy Ray, special agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, will be honored Sept. 10 with the Egypt Shrine Annual Community Service Award.

The event will be at 7:30 p.m. at the shrine, 4050 Dana Shores Drive.

Krewes Planning Annual Events

The Caribbean Cowboys and the Krewe of Pandora have annual events Sept. 13.

The Cowboys will present the Queen Betsy "Bead Barn" Lee's Captain's Party from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Dr. Blaise Alfano Conference Center, 11606 N. McKinley Drive. Dress is tropical casual.

The Krewe of Pandora will have its seventh annual Goddess Induction Ball at 6:30 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Downtown Tampa, 513 S. Florida Ave.

African Violet Society Meets Thursday

EAST Marina D'Abreau of the Hillsborough County Extension Office will present a program on "Integrated Pest Management" at Thursday's meeting of the Tampa African Violet Society.

The free event will be at 7 p.m. at the Ragan Community Center, 1200 E. Lake Ave.
