SOUTH TAMPA - Mabry Elementary is losing another principal to Westchase Elementary.

Scott Weaver, who came to the South Tampa school three years ago, will begin at Westchase on Monday. The school board approved the appointment Thursday, and Weaver announced it to parents at a Mabry PTA meeting that night.

At Westchase, Weaver will take over from Joyce Wieland, whom he replaced at Mabry. Wieland was recently named Hillsborough's general director of exceptional student education.

Weaver told parents the Westchase position is "very sought after."

"It's a similar type of environment" as Mabry, he said.

Weaver said his replacement at Mabry will be appointed by the school board Oct. 7 and should begin work Oct. 8. During the transition, he will work with Mabry Assistant Principal Courtney Clark and at Westchase with Wieland.

"If every school could be like [Mabry], if every kid could spend a week in an environment like this, then that child would benefit," Weaver said.

Before coming to Mabry in 2005, Weaver taught at Tampa Bay Boulevard Elementary and was assistant principal at Bryant Elementary.

He grew up in New Jersey and joined the Air Force after high school. He spent time at MacDill Air Force Base and the last of his four years of service in Alaska, providing weather briefings to fighter pilots.

He received his bachelor's degree from the University of South Florida in 1997 and a master's in educational leadership from Saint Leo College in 2001.
