TAMPA - New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter's baseball numbers are impressive. Since 1996, he's had more than 2,500 career hits, 200 home runs, and 1,000 RBIs.
But on Davis Islands, the stats on a house he's having built on Bahama Circle are also eye-popping. When completed, it will be almost 31,000 square feet, with seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms and a pair of three-car garages.
He also wants to build a 6-foot wrought-iron and concrete-pillar fence on the street side of the property.
But before the builder can construct that wall, it needs permission from the City of Tampa's Variance Review Board. That's because city code on Davis Islands only allows a 3 foot solid wall and a 4 foot "transparent" barrier on street-facing lots.
Neighbors of the Jeter mansion are lining up on both sides of the fence.
"I don't think it's so great. It doesn't really fit in with the neighborhood and the spirit of Davis Island" said Duane Eatherly when asked about Jeter's wall proposal.
He thinks many people will protest the structure when it comes up for a vote.
But right across the street from the new Jeter home is Norma Lurie.
She enjoys watching baseball fans come through snapping pictures of the construction site. Lurie has no problem with the wall proposal.
"I think the man should have what he wants and people should leave him alone," said Lurie, who has lived in her house since 1972 and has seen many changes in the neighborhood.
Jeter's wall will come before the Variance Review Board on Aug. 11.
