CULBREATH HEIGHTS - Jim Baker, a Dale Mabry Elementary School parent, has received the 2009 Hillsborough County Public Schools/SERVE Department of Education Parent Involvement of the Year Award.
The awards ceremony, hosted by SERVE/Hillsborough County Public Schools, was held at the Museum of Science & Industry just before the academic year ended. Baker is the first Mabry Elementary School parent to receive this honor, which was presented by MaryEllen Elia, superintendent of schools.
While serving as president of Mabry's PTA during 2007-08, Baker was at school early each morning, helping the school's administrators, answering parents' questions and coordinating PTA-related efforts - all before heading to his job as a legal administrator for Yerrid law firm. During his presidency, Baker oversaw more than 40 PTA committees. In 2008, Baker served as president of the Dad's Club, leading a group of men in their efforts to hold Family Movie Nights, Donuts with Dad and other activities for students and parents. He also led the school's Beautification Day committee, organized the grandparents lunch, and served on both Website and Health & Fitness committees along with his wife, Marcy Solomon Baker. The Bakers have one daughter, Samantha, who is a student at the school.
