DAVIS ISLANDS - A $3.8 million, yearlong project to replace about 6 miles of aging water mains serving Davis Islands is under way.
The city of Tampa's Investing in Neighborhoods project is intended to enhance service reliability by helping alleviate service interruptions associated with aging pipes. It also will increase water pressure, improving fire protection for homes and businesses.
Maps and letters were mailed to more than 1,500 Davis Islands residences, notifying people that brief interruptions of water service may occur during construction. When outages are scheduled, residents will be alerted with door hangers, and the contractor is required to knock on the door, said Harry Glenn, chief construction engineer.
Also, periodically, local traffic will be detoured.
To assist with post-construction restoration, crews will photograph construction areas prior to beginning the project.
Work began in mid-October and now is taking place in several areas, including Baltic Circle, Danube Avenue and South Davis Boulevard, Glenn said.
Residents are cautioned to keep children and pets away from construction areas at all time.
Work is scheduled for completion by October 2010.
